Skipping walks all summer isn't realistic, and it isn't necessary either. Here's the routine we use before heading out on a hot day.
1. Check the pavement first (30 seconds)
Press the back of your hand to the sidewalk for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws — stick to grass or wait for cooler hours.
2. Soak the cooling gear (2 minutes)
Wet your PawBreeze cooling vest, mat, or bandana in cool water and wring out the excess while you grab the leash and water bottle.
3. Fit it snugly but not tight (1 minute)
A cooling vest or bandana should sit close to the skin — loose gear won't make good contact and won't cool as effectively.
4. Bring water for both of you (30 seconds)
A collapsible bowl and a bottle of cool water takes seconds to grab and matters more than almost anything else on a hot walk.
5. Pick shaded routes and time it right (ongoing)
Early morning or after sunset is best. If you must go midday, plan a route with tree cover and shorten the distance.
None of this requires special planning once it's a habit — just five minutes before you head out the door, and your dog gets the same walk without the heat risk.
